Words and language give human beings a way to name not only who we know ourselves to be, but also the things that we feel and experience every day. Spanning years and cultures, LGBTQ+ people have created and claimed (and reclaimed) language and words that capture who we are and who we love. Words that paint pictures and make visible our beauty, our resilience, our love, and our pain.
In the spring of 2017, the Virginia Anti-Violence Project began an intentional process of listening in LGBTQ+ communities to how we talk about our identities and relationships, how we describe our longings and desires, the words we use to talk about intimacy and sex, and how we name our trauma and pain. This Glossary is the beginning of an ongoing process to document and explore language that has existed in the past and continues to live and evolve today across LGBTQ+ communities. This glossary is multi-dialectical, multilingual, and multicultural and is rooted in Black, African American, and Latinx identities, communities, and experiences that are often excluded from mainstream narratives.

By centering the voices of diverse LGBTQ+ communities of color, this Glossary is a reflection of several of VAVP’s organizational values. We recognize that language and vocabulary are fluid concepts with different interpretations and meanings across communities and cultures. We are excited for this glossary to become a living tool that people in community can use to play with language and explore the various ways words and terms are used. And, we are excited to hear your feedback in this ongoing process.

Las palabras y el lenguaje nos dan a lxs seres humanos los medios para nombrar lo que sentimos que somos, y también todas aquellas cosas que experimentamos y vivimos día a día. A lo largo de los años y a través de las culturas, las personas LGBTQ+ hemos creado y reclamado nuestro lenguaje- palabras que recogen quiénes somos y a quién amamos. Palabras que construyen imágenes y hacen visible nuestra belleza, nuestra resistencia y adaptación, nuestro amor y nuestro dolor.
En la primavera de 2017, el Proyecto Contra la Violencia de Virginia comenzó un proceso consciente de escuchar a las comunidades LGBTQ+, de escuchar cómo hablamos de nuestras identidades y relaciones, como describimos nuestros anhelos y deseos, cuáles son las palabras que usamos para hablar de nuestra intimidad y sexualidad, y cómo nombramos nuestros traumas y dolores. Este glosario es el comienzo de un proceso continuo de documentación y exploración del lenguaje que existía, existe y continúa vivo y evolucionando hoy en día en las comunidades LGBTQ+. Este glosario es multidialéctico, multilingüe y multicultural, y está arraigado en las identidades y experiencias de las comunidades Negras, Afroamericanas y Latinx, las cuales son excluidas a menudo de la cultura dominante.
Queremos agradecer y honrar las contribuciones de todas y cada una de las personas que compartieron sus ideas, emociones, palabras y experiencias con nosotrxs en el comienzo de esta obra.
